20 December '86, first band meeting UDS, intended to do just one jam session at a festival in Utrecht (11 January '87). In an out-of-the-blue jam session of 45 minutes a sound cocktail is brewed, which is literally unheard-of. Here something revolutionarily new and exciting is going on. Both press and audience are baffled. New was the live strength: drums, bass, guitar, with added elements from hiphop: rap and scratch. What was happening here was so different that a name for it still had to be invented. Now, ten years later, this sound which UDS happened to come across is one of the most potent contemporary genres in the music spectre and is copied all over the world. But it all started in the Netherlands on the initiative of musicians who refused to be curbed by the pigeon-hole mentality of the time. The noncommital character of a jam session soon grew into the fixed form of a close group process which laid the foundation for the band's present international success. Chaotic are the first two years, in which the band works in a very selective way in a series of fascinating club performances, strategic supporting performances (Red Hot Chili Peppers), well-chosen radio and TV performances and 'special occasions' (Masters of Reality and De La Soul). The live reputation of the band expands like the proverbial oil stain. 'The word was out', there was a build-up of nervous commotion, everybody wanted to be 'on time'. In this 'obscure' period - no record yet, but live on MTV Europe - UDS really swept the New Music Seminar NY (summer '89) off its feet. Everywhere 'the Squad' appears there is a similar reaction of disbelief and pure delight.
